Mary Magdalene: the woman who found redemption at the feet of Jesus

Mary Magdalene

Have you ever stopped to think about who Mary Magdalene really was?
For centuries her image was surrounded by mystery, misunderstanding and judgement. Some called her a sinner, others a saint, and some see her as a symbol of the transformation only Christ can bring about. But what does the Bible actually reveal about this woman? And why does her story still echo as a testimony of faith and redemption?

Mary Magdalene, from the town of Magdala, is one of the women most often mentioned in the Gospels. The Bible tells us that Jesus cast seven demons out of her (Luke 8:2), an act that marks the beginning of a deep journey of deliverance and faith.
After that transforming encounter, Mary becomes a faithful follower of Christ, going with him on his travels and supporting the ministry out of her own resources.

But what stands out most is the depth of her loyalty. While many disciples fled at the moment of the crucifixion, she stayed there, at the foot of the cross, witnessing the Saviour’s suffering.

Mary Magdalene represents the restored woman, who moves from darkness into light, from a past of suffering into the call of grace. Her life is a powerful reminder that no one is beyond the reach of God’s forgiveness.

Biblical reflection with a passage

📖 “Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene went early, while it was still dark, to the tomb, and saw the stone taken away from the tomb.”
— John 20:1

It was she, a woman once tormented, who had the privilege of being the first to see the risen Christ. That detail is not accidental — it is a divine message: the Gospel begins where grace reaches the unlikely.

Mary Magdalene did not only witness the resurrection; she was the first messenger of the living Christ, carrying the news to the apostles. Her name echoes as a symbol of faith and courage, showing that a true encounter with Jesus turns shame into testimony.

Across the centuries, the image of Mary Magdalene was shaped by traditions, interpretations and even historical confusion. In the Middle Ages she came to be associated with the sinful woman mentioned in Luke 7:37 — the one who anointed Jesus’ feet with tears and perfume.

However, the Bible never says that woman and Mary Magdalene are the same person. That merging of figures came later, probably because of the similarity between stories of women transformed by Christ’s forgiveness.

That confusion meant that for a long time Mary Magdalene was seen only as a symbol of repentance, when in fact her biblical story shows a faithful disciple, present at the most decisive moments in the history of salvation:

  • She followed Jesus to the cross.

  • She stayed at the tomb when everyone else had gone.

  • She was the first witness of the resurrection.

In other words, Mary Magdalene does not represent the shame of the past, but the victory of grace. Her story shows that real transformation does not come from guilt, but from a personal encounter with Christ.

Biblical reflection with a passage

📖 “Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’ She turned and said to him, ‘Rabboni!’ which is to say, ‘Teacher!'”
— John 20:16

In that short exchange, the Gospel reveals one of the most intimate and profound moments in Scripture. Mary recognises Jesus not by his appearance, but by the voice that calls her by name. That detail captures the power of a personal relationship with Christ — he does not only forgive, he calls each person by name, restoring identity and purpose.

A transforming conclusion

The life of Mary Magdalene is a testimony that God’s love goes beyond appearances and human interpretation. She teaches us that real faith is not only following Jesus, but staying with him even when everything seems lost.

Her legacy is that of a healed, faithful, transformed woman — the first to announce the greatest news in human history: “He is risen!”

If the story of Mary Magdalene echoes something in your life today, perhaps it is the call to remember that grace still calls you by name.
