Principalities and Powers: the 4 most influential at work in the spiritual world
Have you ever felt that certain struggles in life go beyond what is visible? Situations that cannot be explained by human problems alone, but that carry a spiritual weight behind them. The Bible reveals that there is an invisible world where evil forces operate with well-defined strategies: these are the principalities and powers.
The apostle Paul warns us plainly:
📖 “For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)
These forces are not merely symbolic: they influence people, families, churches, nations and entire systems. Among them, four stand out for how consistently they have worked throughout history and still work today: Jezebel, Mammon, Leviathan and Dagon.
The spirit of Jezebel – Manipulation and idolatry
Among the best-known principalities, the spirit of Jezebel is perhaps the most cunning. The name points back to Queen Jezebel, wife of King Ahab, who led Israel into idolatry, persecuted the prophets of God and established the worship of Baal.
📖 “As if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, he took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.” (1 Kings 16:31)
📌 Marks of the spirit of Jezebel:
-
Manipulation and control over leaders and people.
-
Encouragement of idolatry and false worship.
-
Sexual immorality and spiritual seduction.
-
Rebellion against God’s authority.
This spirit was not confined to the Old Testament. In Revelation 2:20, Jesus rebukes the church in Thyatira for tolerating Jezebel, showing that its influence still works among God’s people.
✅ How do you overcome Jezebel?
-
Through fervent prayer and full submission to God.
-
Through faithfulness to the Word, refusing to tolerate sin.
-
Through spiritual authority in Christ, resisting firmly.
📖 “Subject yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
The spirit of Mammon – The love of money
Another powerful principality is Mammon, which stands for the idolatry of wealth, greed and materialism. Jesus warned us about this spirit directly:
📖 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and Mammon.” (Matthew 6:24)
Mammon works by slipping into the mind and the heart, making people place their trust in money instead of God. It creates an illusion of financial security and promotes an inversion of values, where “having” seems to matter more than “being”.
📌 Marks of the spirit of Mammon:
-
It replaces trust in God with money.
-
It promotes injustice and corruption in the pursuit of power.
-
It feeds selfishness and an excessive attachment to wealth.
-
It turns material possessions into a false god.
✅ How do you overcome Mammon?
-
By trusting God as our provider.
-
By practising generosity and letting go.
-
By putting the Kingdom of God first.
📖 “Seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)
The spirit of Leviathan – Pride and confusion
Leviathan is described in Job 41 as a formidable creature, feared and untameable. Although presented in symbolic form, the Bible and Christian tradition identify Leviathan as an evil spirit tied to pride, confusion and division.
📖 “On earth there is nothing like him, who is made without fear. He sees everything that is high. He is king over all the sons of pride.” (Job 41:33-34)
This principality works subtly, distorting communication, generating misunderstandings and feeding arrogance. Its aim is to sow division in families, churches and communities, creating an atmosphere of mistrust and confusion.
📌 Marks of the spirit of Leviathan:
-
It feeds pride and spiritual vanity.
-
It distorts the truth and generates confusion.
-
It breaks relationships and creates division.
-
It blocks clarity in communication.
✅ How do you overcome Leviathan?
-
By practising humility before God.
-
By always seeking truth and reconciliation.
-
By putting on the spiritual armour in order to resist.
📖 “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)
The spirit of Dagon – Idolatry and false worship
Dagon was the Philistine god of fertility and grain, mentioned in 1 Samuel 5, when the Philistines placed the Ark of the Covenant inside the temple of Dagon. God showed his sovereignty by toppling the statue of Dagon before his presence.
📖 “The Philistines took the ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. And they set it in the house of Dagon. […] The next day, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord.” (1 Samuel 5:1-3)
This principality stands for idolatry, false worship and religious syncretism. Its influence leads people to trust human traditions and empty religious practices, pulling them away from true worship of God.
📌 Marks of the spirit of Dagon:
-
It promotes idolatry and false substitutes for worship.
-
It weakens faith with superficial practices.
-
It pulls the heart away from the real presence of God.
✅ How do you overcome Dagon?
-
By worshipping God in spirit and in truth.
-
By rejecting modern idols and traditions that replace Christ.
-
By cultivating a life of intimacy with God.
📖 “But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshippers.” (John 4:23)
How do you overcome principalities and powers?
The Bible assures us that in Christ we already have victory over every principality and power. But to live out that victory, we need to be spiritually prepared.
📖 “Behold, I give you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will in any way hurt you.” (Luke 10:19)
📌 Spiritual strategies for victory:
✅ Put on the armour of God daily (Ephesians 6:13-18).
✅ Live a life of prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21).
✅ Stand firm in the truth of the Word (John 8:32).
✅ Reject every form of idolatry and deceit (1 Corinthians 10:14).
✅ Walk in the Spirit, not in the flesh (Galatians 5:16).
And above all, trust that Christ has already won for us:
📖 “Having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” (Colossians 2:15)
A transforming conclusion
Principalities and powers work with clear strategies: to manipulate, deceive, divide and turn people away from the path of God. But in Christ we have authority and power to resist them all. When we live grounded in the Word, clothed in the armour of God and led by the Holy Spirit, there is no principality or power able to defeat us.
So stand firm, resist the enemy, and trust that your victory is already secured at the cross of Christ.
